Our Politicians are more corrupt than yours! - 3 Aug 2010
I try not to get involved with politics, especially when in the pub.
All guide books advise against it, and sometimes opinions can be quite extreme. And let's face it apart from lining their own pockets
what are politicians actually good for. Now before I get a load of mail from people stating that their family has lost members in order
that I live in a democracy and would I really rather live under a totalitarian regime, the answer is of course I wouldn't. Bulgaria is
still quite new to democracy, it being only some 20 years ago they lived under the communist regime of Todorov Zhivkov, under his regime
everyone got to vote, in fact they were forced to vote. The only problem being that there was only one person to vote for.
Being from the UK our politicians try and make out they are all whiter than white when they are in opposition, and the party in power is always abusing it for
self interest. Then every 10 or so years the public and Rupert Murdoch (of the Sun) change allegiance and elect the opposition into power. Normally on the
back of sleaze or corruption charges. See Tory Sleaze of John Major, then Labour MPs expenses of the last election. I wonder why we actually bother. The
principle of democracy is great, the implementation unfortunately is very difficult to maintain. The same could also be said for communism, going by Karl
Marxs' definition rather than that adopted by Stalin and friends.
Bulgaria is at the moment going through political scandals of corruption that would embarrass even labour MPs with duck ponds and siblings earning
£60k for answering the phone. I am not sure of the accuracy of what I am about to say as the information was given me in the pub under the influence.
Here is what I have been told though. The leader of the DPS party in Bulgaria has just been convicted of making circa 1 millions euros disappear.
Excellent you may think he has been caught. His punishment. A fine of 1300 leva (about 650 euros). He is still in parliament, and as far as I know the
money has not been recovered. Not a bad return and almost risk free!
The tobacco subsidy of 160 million leva (80 millions Euros), instead of being paid on time and through the state bank. Has been paid very late and the
transaction was carried out by a bank who is headed by the girlfriend of the current Prime minister Boyko Borisov. This is not considered corrupt, as it
was not a family member. How much interest is given on 80 million euros for a couple of months in a high interest account. Do you think the account manager
at the bank in question would get a commission. And this is considered normal practice.
This is where the story comes full circle. The current Prime minister, was the chief of security for the last communist dictator. So although
Bulgaria is a fully working Democracy, the past members of the political elite from the communist party, are now the elected politicians of this new
republic. Has anything changed, of course it has. You now have a choice of who you want to line their pockets. The members of my pub hold politicians
with the same contempt that I have for British MPs. So I would go against the advice in guide books and do discuss politics in Bulgaria. I find it best
to have a competition as to who has the worst politicians!
Prime Minster with his old pal Zhivkov!
