How Much did it Cost to set Yourselves up?(part 2)
So the house is in the bag, and so far I have spent less than the cost of my new VFR.
Unfortunately the setup costs were far from over, although really quite modest in comparison. One of the first and still ongoing things we are doing
is slowly renovating the house. Now when I say renovating ourselves, I mean exactly that. I do not mean pay someone else to renovate for you
that really isn't in the ethos of being more self reliant. I should point out that my previous occupations have been, in order:
- Bakers Assitant
- Computer Engineer
So you can see I am fully qualified to take on the most difficult tasks involved with house renovation. Here are some pics of the things I have managed
to create myself. They are not perfect I know. If I had paid someone to do work of this quality I would be livid. Self sufficiency is all about
doing it yourself though, and as I can only complain to myself what is the point.
First up Doors - Cost of materials 10 Lev (5 Euros per door)
Homemade Sofa - Cost of Materials 8 Lev (4 Euros) The cushion was left by the previous owner.
New Staircase - Cost of Materials 50 Lev (25 Euros)
TheGudlife Top Tip No 1
If like me you have never actually used woodworking tools, and really have no idea what you are doing, I would suggest that you start
your carpentry career with something quite basic, like a shelf. Not me though. I went for stairs!. The staircase featured above took four days
of solid work to create. When I informed my neighbours I would be making my own staircase they all advised me against. Unfotunately I am not very
good at being told I shouldn't do something. They were however right. That said my staircase works, it does not comply to EU health and safety
regulations, so if I die using them I will only be able to sue myself, no solicitor required.
Tiling of Wet Room - Cost of Materials 100 Lev (50 Euros)
As with most things in life, DIY skills really aren't that difficult to obtain and are things most people can accomplish with a little bit
of perserverence, and a lot patience.
