Deep Bed Method? - 16 October 2010
I have had a few days away from the garden, and am now back into it if only the planning stage.
My not to be out down next door neighbour, has delivered me some mushrooms (5 Kg) which he picked for free after my diabolical attempt at using spore
kits from the UK. He took great pleasure in giving my the carrier bag full, and telling me that it took him 15 minutes to gather them.........
Early September - 2 September 2010 Although we are still deep in summer, most of the crops here have finished.
My greenhouse after the little bit of rain we had has sprouted a very late watermelon, it is probably to late to ripen but I can't bring myself
to kill it just in case!........
French Beans MarkII - 24 Aug 2010 My crop of French bewans this year has left quite a lot to be desired, I think I have probaly only
managed to harvest about twice of what I actually planted. This sort of ratio does not really make any sense especially the work that goes into planting, weeding
and growing the things. I have been aound the village to see if it is just my crop that has failed to work, and unfortunately........
Potatoes the results are in! - 21 Aug 2010 I have concluded my thesis on potato growing and am ready to release the results.
After struggling getting last years crop of potatoes out of the ground, and knowing that I had probably left a good few in there as well,
I decided this year to grow some in containers (well stacks of old tyres)........
Digging for Victory - 10 Aug 2010 First of all, Potatoes, I have grown tons of the damn things. Excellent I shall not be
buying any this year. I will have plenty to eat all through the winter as well as having loads of new potatoes now for salads, or just boiled with butter. The
problem though with potatoes is not planting them or digging the ground is the spring before they are planted. It is getting the blighters........
Not Always a Good Crop - 24 July 2010 The problem with trying to grow most if not all of your own food,
is that sometimes you are at the mercy of the weather........
Stringing Onions - 15 July 2010 My white onions have all been picked from the ground, they are now strung up and getting a bit of sun before they go into my store room. I have
let a few go to seed for next year's crop. This year I have also grown red onions but they have a few weeks still to go before I pull them up.......
Welcome to July 2010 As well as collecting and preserving the summer glut of tomatoes, peppers and what not
from the garden, I have also got to get a fuel pump fixed on my car, have a Bulgarian MOT (4 wheels = pass) and renew my insurance on said vehicle.
The tomatoes are preserved the traditional Bulgarian way, by making a kind of tomato puree, and sealing in jars - Not a kilner in sight......
How Much should I grow - 13 June 2010 This can be answered quite easily, as much as you can. Even if you can't eat it yourself you can always give it away to friends and neighbours,
if they aren't growing their own. It might even convert a few as well......
Way to Self Reliance Part 1 - 13 June 2010 There are two main methods to becoming more self reliant. You can live as you are and try and provide all the things that you want.
Or you can reduce the things you want down to the things you actually need. When people speak to me about being self sufficient, one of the phrases
I hear most is. 'Oh I couldn't live without that'. When in truth, if you can provide yourself with food and shelter you actually can do without
quite a lot that is deemed essential in the modern world......
Introduction To Becoming More Self Reliant - 4 June 2010
The Idea to become more self reliant in what I do and how I live probably stems, from being brought up
at a time when Felicity Kendal in the Good Life were at their peak. More than that though as a young child I spent many a summer holiday staying with my
