Welcome to The Gud Life

The 'Gud' Life, self reliant living in rural Bulgaria. Thinking of selling up and making a 'Gud' life for yourself? Well we have done just that. We have been living as self sufficently as possible since August 2008. This site describes the many successes, and even more numerous 'challenges' we have encountered on swapping our 'rat race' life for a better way of living.

Introduction To Becoming More Self Reliant - Read this First!

The idea to become more self reliant in what I do and how I live probably stems from being brought up at a time when Felicity Kendal and 'The Good Life' were at their peak. More than that though as a young child I spent many a summer holiday staying with my grandparents......

How to Make Lavender Essential Oil - 25 June 2010

Luck would have it that in owning an illegal still for making alcohol can be easily explained to the authorities by saying that you are not making moonshine brandy, but are in fact creating essential oils, which is completely legal and for which you need a still. Two birds one stone comes to mind. .......

(Updated 24 June 2010!) My local pub or 'kruchma' as it is known can be considered as like many other local village drinking establishments in the world. Men Rule! (At least whilst away from their wives). I have been making the most of my local pub it is a great place to air your problems, practice my Bulgarian and Turkish, and like most pubs at the moment watch the world cup. I am not a fervent.......

My Day Trip with the Imam - 21 June 2010

The mosque in the village of Fotinovo is looked after by one of my neighbours. His name is Hussain and he is an 80 year old man, with a cheeky smile and a voice like Pavarotti. He would no doubt put many other octagenerians to shame.......

Double Glazing The Truth! 18 June 2010

The continuing saga of a computer engineer slowly turning into a mr fixit. Well almost. I have not owned a television since 2000, but I know that it was, or maybe still is filled with programmes on interior design , changing rooms type programmes, and all other such tosh of interior design. Well being a typical non effeminate bloke.......

Basic Beekeeping 17 June 2010

Bees really are a gardeners friend. Not only do they make free food in honey, but without their help in pollination there would not be much left growing in your garden. It is quite possible to keep a hive of bees with absolutely no garden at all. They are just as adept at collecting pollen and nectar in urban......

Making Mead 16 June 2010

Mead is believed to be the oldest known alcholic drink to mankind , it is made by the simple fermentation of honey and spices. I have put the basic recipe below, but you can add all sorts of your own flavours and each type of honey will add its own charaacter to the flavour......

How Much should I grow - 13 June 2010

This can be answered quite easily, as much as you can. Even if you can't eat it yourself you can always give it away to friends and neighbours, if they aren't growing their own. It might even convert a few as well......

Way to Self Reliance Part 1 - 13 June 2010

There are two main methods to becoming more self reliant. You can live as you are and try and provide all the things that you want. Or you can reduce the things you want down to the things you actually need. When people speak to me about being self sufficient, one of the phrases I hear most is. 'Oh I couldn't live without that'. When in truth, if you can provide yourself with food and shelter you actually can do without quite a lot that is deemed essential in the modern world......

How (not) to be an Expat Part 2 - 12 June 2010

I am really concentrating this article on my experience in Bulgaria, but have used the same approach in Tanzania, and other countries whose first language is not English. Obviously if you have emigrated to a country where you have a good command of the first language this makes integration a lot easier.

I live in the centre of a small village consisting of no more than 300 residents.......

Annies' World Part Three - 12 June 2010

As mentioned previously, I am the only girl that frequents the local pub and the only reason I get away with it is because I am British and I am accompanied by a man. Never would I be accepted into the pub if I was a single white female. That is how it is, no point getting all feminist on them.......

How to Make Cherry Wine 10 Jun 2010

Cherry wine. This is my first attempt at making cherry wine. I could have bought some cherries and made some but as I have two cherry trees in my garden that seems to go against the principle of self reliant living. So yes, first cherry brandy.......

Beat the Rise in Cigarette Duty Grow Your Own - 7 June 2010

The region I live in (Kardjali), is a large producer of aromatic tobacco and as smoker of the said weed I was quite interested how it was done. As well as providing the main source of work for many in the area since the rule of the Ottoman empire. Tatoon, as it is called......

How to get Cheap Firewood - 7 June 2010

Annies World Life in Bulgaria Part 2 - 7 June 2010

Having travelled to many countries, I have experienced the extremes of beliefs and religions. Being a strong minded female, I have had some issues with the way women are treated, you know - they walk ten steps behind the man, don't speak, accept that male strangers can fondle and 'rub' against you to their hearts content. I was therefore very concerned when......

How (not) to Make Brandy - 6 June 2010

I have obviuosly never done this as it is illegal here in Bulgaria, as it is in most countries (honest). If like me you have attempted to make homemade and country wines, and they have turned out to be, not quite the tipple you were expecting. They can be easily turned into spirit. I should point that you shoud not do this, or follow the instructions, I take absolutely no responsibilty for idiots......
