Introduction To Becoming More Self Reliant - Read this First!
The idea to become more self reliant in what I do and how I live probably stems from being brought up
at a time when Felicity Kendal and 'The Good Life' were at their peak. More than that though as a young child I spent many a summer holiday staying with my
Kimets Cow - 30 Nov 2010 The end of November comes and with it the start of the colder weather. The wood burner has
been in use almost nightly. The logs are all chopped. The coal has been stocked up. Southern Bulgaria has an excellent climate. I have lived near the equator in Africa
where after 10 in the morning it is too hot to move. I have spent time travelling around Thailand, where the humidity is suffocating, and of course the UK where the types of different
rain need a 5 volume book to catalogue them all. Here though there are proper seasons, cold in the winter, hot in the summer, and a bit wet in between..................
Chimney Sweep - 24 Nov 2010 Part of trying to live self reliantly is having a go at things you would normally leave to experts, or in the case of sweeping the chimney
someone who knows what they are doing. Not me though! Sweeping a chimney how hard can it be?.................
Anyone But Tottenham - 20 Nov 2010 One of the good points about not owning a television is that it makes a
great excuse to visit my local pub to watch a game of football. I am a Tottenham fan, I shall not apologise. Today was the north London
derby against Arsenal at the Emirates stadium. Tottenham have not won away at Arsenal since 1993..................
Korban Bayram - 16 Nov 2010 Today is 'Korban Bayram'. The muslim festival of sacrifice. I am no expert so if I get
the details wrong I apologise in advance! The village of Samodiva in southern Bulgaria has come to a standstill today as the festivities begin. I
was invited and attended the sacrifice of one cow, two goats and a sheep. Ilyas my neighbour was kind enough to give me a leg of goat to take home with
me as well.................
Magic Beans have Sprouted - 15 Nov 2010 One of the good things about living in another country is the chance to learn new things, as well as pass on your knowledge in the hope that your
neighbours can learn something about you and your culture................
'This is Bulgaria, it's normal' - 10 Nov 2010 I have been accused of having rosy tinted glasses on when I eulogize about my life in Bulgaria. So I thought for balance I should point out some
of the things that have infuriated me (albeit only mildly) in the last two years. Without exception (maybe pot holes) obsessive documentation is the all
I am a Woodworm - 5 Nov 2010 With this being a quite time in the self reliant garden. I am doing other tasks that
normally get put off. One of those has been to make book shelves for all the books that I have aquired...............
A Walk in The Woods - 3 Nov 2010 Today I have had some time off from the self reliant garden. I have taken a stroll through the
forest that surrounds my village. The weather has been very knid and although a little nippy in the morning the sun has been out and there has not been a breath of wind..............
Parnips, Leeks and Unwanted Gifts - 01 November 2010 The first frosts of the year are happening, which means that the parsnips can be pulled as and when
there are also fresh leeks in the garden, and winter cabbages recovering from 'cow' attacks still growing. It is also the time of digging over the rest of the garden
before the really cold weather sets in, in January. My cat 'Dave' has also decided it was time for an early christmas present.......
October has been and gone, the clocks have gone back, the leaves have fallen from the trees, and the mornings are frosty. This is one of my favourite
