Introduction To Becoming More Self Reliant - Read this First!
The idea to become more self reliant in what I do and how I live probably stems from being brought up
at a time when Felicity Kendal and 'The Good Life' were at their peak. More than that though as a young child I spent many a summer holiday staying with my
Ty Bach - 28 October 2010 Translation from welsh: small house
This is a subject not normally discussed, however, in light of the recent news reports on squat toilets being introduced in Rochdale shopping centre and
subsequent discussions with colleagues, I think it is time..............
A Helping Hand - 26 October 2010 Bulgarian village life, along with good neighbours is a good way to live. There can never
be two days that are the same. Coming up to the end of October, and there is little to be done in the garden, except to dig for next year. This can not
be done in a day and I typically set two hours aside each day to do a bit of digging. Yesterday after my mornings work in the garden, I was just settling down with a book
when Ilyas came knocking on the door..............
Dig Chop Rake - 23 October 2010 The rain has helpd of for a couple of days som I have been busy digging, chopping logs
and raking where I have dug. I have created 3 deep beds for trial next year. Just haven't decided what I shall test out compared to noraml beds. The
obvious choice would be root vegatables of some sort as these will surely do better in a very well dug out bed.............
Preparing for Winter - 20 October 2010 As the days shorten and the weather starts to turn, quite a lot of time is spent preparing for the
short but very sharp Bulgarian winter. Last year we managed day time temps of about -15C for a about a week and for those that don't know how cold that is.
It put off several brass monkeys from coming to visit me!.............
Feeding Your Bees - 20 October 2010 At certain times of the year you may have to feed your bees, either when they have run out
of honey and there is no nectar to collect, or to supplement their stores in autumn after you have robbed their honey.............
A Month of Celebration 19 October 2010 I am still quite new to my life in Samodiva, and although I have been here for over 2 years
and the holidays happen every year. As each celebration passes I am getting more involved. I suppose intergration into a foreign culture is not something
that is done over night, but is a slow gradual process.............
Where to Locate your Hives - 19 October 2010 This can be almost anywhere, ideally you want them on a south facing slope, and protected from
the wind. I keep mine close to a hedge, this helps keep the worst of the elements away from the hive.
Things to keep in mind when siting a bee hive:.........
Deep Bed Method? - 16 October 2010 I have had a few days away from the garden, and am now back into it if only the planning stage.
My not to be out down next door neighbour, has delivered me some mushrooms (5 Kg) which he picked for free after my diabolical attempt at using spore
kits from the UK. He took great pleasure in giving my the carrier bag full, and telling me that it took him 15 minutes to gather them.........
Smolyan and Pamparovo - 15 Oct 2010 As my better half is here (yes you Annie) we thought we would tour the local area, as when she has finished tidying up my mess she really
does deserve a break. The Rhodopees are not far away and the Ski resort in Pamparovo is in beautiful countryside and is a lot nicer
than when all the 'Ya - Ya's' turn up and talk skiing with Pimms.......
A Day out in Sofia - 10 Oct 2010 Sorry for not updating as frequently as normal only I have been quite busy and have Annie over visiting as well. On Monday (10 Oct) I had to go to
Sofia for the day to get my Degree Certificate (Maths & Physics from Swansea) legalized so that I can be employed to teach computers at the
foreign language school here in Kardjali.......
The Importance of a Good Roof - 7 Oct 2010 When we first came to Bulgaria to buy a house one of the main things that we were looking for was a house with a good roof. We knew what the weather
would be like in mid winter, and if the house didn't have a good roof ie leaked that would be detrimental to the rest of the building if it went unfixed
until we had time to come out.......
Chopping Wood - 3 Oct 2010 The weather has hinted at the cold to come, and my cental heating system consists of a 'petchka' (wood burning stove) and pretty much
nothing else. The good point being, that as well as wood being relatively inexpensive I also have 15 or mature trees that can be given
a haircut for additional fuel.......
We have arrived in October and are all fit and healthy, this month includes a visit from the better half, a trip to Sofia and maybe the start of a new job.
More on all that as and when though, last months stuff can be found below or use the link for September on the left. The weather here is absolutely great at the
moment, I even managed a spin on my motorbike, before the winter weather sets in.
